I tried changing my 5-line kite down to 4 and my! The kite suddenly seemed unsafe in strong winds! And it crashes really hard. The change also made the kite more difficult to relaunch. Uncomfortable, isn't it?

Have you tried doing this then getting the same results?

I think it depends on your kite. There are some kites that will only work with 5 lines, that's why they don't fly correctly with 4 lines. If yours is designed to have 4 lines, then there would be no difference with its performance. You should not have problems with relaunching too, if only you know how to do properly the front and rear line flip.

i've experienced things the other way around.. i tried riding my kite with 5 lines & it only added much dragging & riding became more complicated.. that only means a 5th line isn't needed anymore..

i already tried using 5 lines before.. it was a mess, i don;t even know how to keep my fingers in control. after that one attempt, i just followed the old trick and it still works so much better.. and by the way, you can also try launching ur four liner kite using the bounce method. first, try rocking your kite back & forth until it goes bouncing up on it's side.

even though 5 lines are always safer, the extra drag and full power from having 4 lines are still much important for me..

You'll know the right number of kite line for you by the way the kite responds when you grab the line. If you worry about bar orientation, take it and hook it before you even play with the lines.

For all the guys saying that the 5th line gives the stability to power kites: Well, if I depower my kite using the depower line, it will just create slack in the fifth line and it will make my kite stable.. it won't be much of a difference during your sessions..

As for me, i only need the fifth line in ligther winds so i can relaunch on the water.

i personally consider having more kite lines means more hassles and more risks involved. So having 4 kite lines is a lesser evil then. and having 5 lines would only give u numerous disadvantages!
