Kites - Sizes
A Kite is measured based on its overall surface area when it is laid flat on the ground. Kites come in various sizes ranging from 7 square meters to 21 square meters or even larger. The bigger the kite, the more power at a given wind speed. The heavier the rider, the larger the kite needed.
Some kites are more rectangular in shape while others have more tapered ends. Each kite design determines the kites flying characteristics. Wider and shorter kites have less drag because the wing-tip vortices are smaller while high aspect ratios (ribbon-like kites) develop more power in lower wind speeds.
Keep in mind that larger people require more power, therefore, you need a large kite. As your skills increase, you will be able to control a larger kite in more winds. Seasoned kite surfers will likely have 3 or more kite sizes which are needed to accommodate various wind levels.
In general:
Small Kite = light riders + strong wind conditions
Large Kite = heavier riders + light wind conditions
Large and smaller Kite Surfing Boards have the same effect; however, most kite surfers only need one board and one to three kites. Kite prices range from $100 for small kites up to $1700. Prices depend on the size of the kite.
One advice is to remember to understand where you will be riding to figure out the right size kite for you. For beginners, it is recommended to use a small kite.
