Kite Surfing Apparel
Aside from the kite, board, and control devices used in Kite Surfing, there are other pieces of Kite Surfing Equipment that share the same importance. These are the pieces of Kite Surfing Apparel which generally provide utmost protection and comfort to the kite surfer.
Life Jacket
A life jacket is essential in this activity. Kite Surfing Boards will not float completely if you decide to sit on it. For you to keep floating, wear a life jacket or any Personal Floatation Device (PFD) if you unfortunately crash down into the water and cannot re-launch your kite. Most Kite Surfing locations require kite surfers to wear life jackets when Kite Surfing.
In protected areas like lakes and rivers and within 400 meters offshore, the law usually requires the use of PFD Types 1, 2 and 3. In unprotected waters and locations more than 400 meters offshore, kite surfers are required to wear PFD Type 1.
Choose a life jacket that fits you comfortably. It should not limit your movement and should be comfortable as possible.
Wetsuit
The material neoprene makes wetsuits elastic and easy to wear and take off. There are different styles of wetsuits available in the market today. These include the shortie which covers the upper body to the lower legs and the long john which covers your body from the shoulders down to the ankles. A long john includes a long-zipped jacket which also serves as a second layer for the torso.
This comes in different degrees of thickness. Thick wetsuits usually provide warmth and thermal protection but these are usually stiff and therefore, limit the movement. For beginners, it is recommended that you use thicker wetsuits because you would spend more time in the water.
Take good care of your wetsuit by washing it after every use. Use fresh water, and when drying it out in the open, turn it inside out to avoid creasing.
Helmet
A helmet should be used all the time to protect the head in case of a fall. The use of helmet is especially required when the winds exceed 15 knots. In Kite Surfing, theres a chance that your head may fall on the board so a helmet is required to absorb the impact and protect your head.
Water Shoes
Protect your feet from sharp rocks or creatures that may sting or injure you under the water. Use water shoes whenever Kite Surfing. This will prove to be beneficial once you try Kite Surfing on location.
Wear the needed pieces of apparel when Kite Surfing. These should be comfortable as well as functional so that they will be able to successfully provide the protection you need.
