Kite Surfing Safety - Pre-flight

Kite Surfing Safety - Pre-flight You already have your Kite Surfing Equipment. You are planning to kite surf, and you have been earnestly looking forward for an adventure. But before you launch your power kite and propel yourself through the water, take a look at the following pre-flight guidelines:

  • Choose a site for Kite Surfing which is at least 100 meters away from trees, buildings, power lines, crowded areas, and other obstructions. When the wind is greater than 20 mph, it is recommended that you launch 200 meters away. And most importantly, avoid kite surfing in swim areas.

  • Check the weather. Avoid straight onshore and offshore winds because these wind directions pose threats. Kite surfers should ride in side or side onshore winds. Do not proceed if there are indications that a storm is coming.

  • Choose the Kite Surfing Kite size that is ideal for the wind range. With winds as low as 5 knots, use kites that measure over 20 meters. At 20-25 knots which is the ideal condition for wind surfing, use kites that are 10-14 meters.

  • Inspect your Kite Surfing Equipment. Make sure that there are no tears or leaky bladders. Inspect your lines carefully. Look for twists and tangles. Replace your line sheathing if it shows any breaks or knots. Test your quick release system. Make sure that your flying lines are equal and replace them if they have knots that can't be untied.

  • Wear protection devices such as helmet, PFD, or impact vest. Always wear a helmet when wearing a board leash to protect your head in case you strike the board. Bring a knife to cut tangled lines and free yourself quickly during desperate circumstances.

  • Be acquainted with Kite Surfing Self-Rescue Techniques. When risky situations arise, you will be going to depend on yourself for survival. Inform someone about your planned return time and location.

  • Do not kite surf alone. Bring someone who is preferably an expert in Kite Surfing.

The pre-flight guidelines above should be followed to ensure your safety. Do not be a casualty of haphazard preparation. Observe the standard precautionary measures and acquire the necessary information before heading out.
