Miami Kite Surfing
One of the best Kite Surfing Destinations is Miami, Florida.
Kite Surfing sites in Miami differ in their depth, size of waves, and number of surfers around. Some of the most popular are the Matheson Park, 87th Street and South Beach.
Matheson has shallow waters and is usually crowded with kite surfers and beachgoers, which makes Launching a Kite a little difficult. 87th and South Beach have deeper waters. Because these are usually crowded with swimmers like in most Miami beaches, beginners are not allowed to surf here.
Due of Kite Surfing’s popularity in the city and the increasing number of resorts and centers that offer Kite Surfing lessons, it’s best to check if your instructor is affiliated with the Professional Air Sports Association (PASA) or the International Kiteboarding Association (IKO). Both organizations aim to provide comprehensive information and professional lessons on air sports such as Kite Surfing, and assure the safety of the sports.
Lessons are usually inclusive of use of all equipment- bow kite, harness, helmet, wetsuit and water shoes. Lesson prices may range from $100 to $150 per hour for beginner lessons.
If you’re a first timer, most instructors would advise you to rent your equipment. Instructors and Kite Surfing centers have equipment to lend their students during lessons.
The two essentials in this sport are the Kite Surfing Kite and Kite Surfing Board. Large inflatable kites and ram air kites are ideal. They come in different aspect-ratios and sizes for various wind conditions. The boards, on the other hand, come in three types; directional surf-style boards, wake-style boards, and twintip boards. Among the three, twintip is the most popular and best suited for beginners. The boards also come in various shapes and sizes to suit your skill level, riding style and wind and water conditions.
When you’ve decided to get your own equipment, you have the option of buying them secondhand or brand new. Most Kite Surfing centers have their own equipment shop and your instructor can advise what equipment best suits you. If you don’ have an instructor, you can also look into Kite Surfing accessory websites where they put up a wide array of the items you’d need. They give you the functions and features of the items to guide you in purchasing.
