There may be times when surfers encounter situations that can lead to serious injuries, even fatality. Strong winds and testy waters are just some of the extrinsic factors that can result to risky situations. Faulty equipment, human error, and haphazard preparation can also spell danger.
As a kite surfer, you are compelled to know the techniques on how to rescue yourself and other kite surfers. In the previous section, we have already laid out the things you need to know about self-rescue techniques. This time around, learn the necessary steps on how you can rescue other kite surfers if the situation calls for it.
First, you need to know the meaning of one simple signal. If a kite surfer waves his or her hands in the air, it only means one thing: trouble. If you come across a situation in which a kite surfer signals trouble, call safety authorities, rescue teams, and life guards for help and assistance.
If assistance cannot be sought immediately, go towards the location of the kite surfer who needs to be rescued. Stay a considerable distance away from the kite surfer. Assess the situation and move with caution. Talk to the kite surfer and then have a rescue plan.
If the downed kite surfer can still pack his equipment and can use both hands to hold the board and his other pieces of equipment, ask him or her to pack his or her board. Let him wind up the kite lines. Stay away from the kite and the kite lines. These are very strong and they might tangle you once you touch them. Moreover, a sudden gust of wind can seize the kite and drag the kite lines.
Make sure that the kite surfer has already wound all the lines. Ask him or her to put the kite above your board and let him or her hold your board. Direct the kite to the nearest beach but make sure that you go 60 degrees downwind on either left or right.
These are just some of the many things that you can do to help other kite surfers who are in danger. Be vigilant and observe the standard safety guidelines at all times.
