Kite Surfing Safety - Testing your Quick Release Systems
As a precautionary measure, Kite Surfers need to test their quick release systems before trying them out. By testing the quick release systems rather than trusting the assertion of manufacturers, product sellers, or anyone in particular, you will actually know for sure that they would work out when the situation calls for it.
- Look for two tables that measure approximately four feet high. Put them together with a distance of about 40 - 50 cm.
- Put the Kite Surfing Control Bar between the two tables.
- Put on your Kite Surfing apparel like your Kite Harness, gloves, and impact vest. Wear your summer and winter kite surfing alternately if you do both.
- Check whether you use a fixed or a chicken loop. If you use a fixed loop, hang yourself in the air by hooking into it.
- Grab the bar and within 10 seconds, try to unhook yourself from the fixed loop. If you were unable to unhook from the fixed loop, its either you need a longer fixed loop, a quick release on your fixed loop, or more lift up exercise.
- Find the quick release on your fixed loop. Try to find it within 10 seconds, and then activate it while hanging in the air.
- On the other hand, if you have a chicken loop, fasten your loop to the bar to suspend yourself in the air.
- Grab the bar. Try to unhook yourself from the chicken loop within 10 seconds successfully. If you were unable to do this simple test, you need a quick release.
- Conversely, bind the shackle line to the bar when shackling in. Shackle in to hang yourself in the air. Try to unshackle within 10 seconds.
Repeat the steps to know for sure that your quick release system works. Moreover, you can dip them in water and mix them up with sand. Cautious Kite Surfers would have two to three quick release systems to choose from. Whenever one quick release system fails, the others can still be used.
