Kite Surfing Boards - Types

Kite Surfing Boards - Types There are several types of Kite Surfing Boards. A kiteboard is similar to other surfboards or wakeboards but is used with a kite to power the rider over water and into the air. There are now several types of kiteboards. There are directional surf-style boards, wakeboard-style boards, hybrids and skim-type boards. Some riders also use standard surfboards.

Generally, kiteboards are classified into:
  • Directional boards have a definite tip and tail like a surf board. A directional board always travel tip first. This is mostly used for waves or light wind days. Directional boards are great for learning and they are often longer, more buoyant and usually more steerable. They travel best when going forward.

  • Bidirectional boards or what is also called Twintip is the most common kiteboard. The outline is completely symmetrical so that it can be ridden in both directions. One end looks like the other end hence the name Twintip. Bi-directional boards are great because it cuts out the need to change feet when turning, they let you jump whenever you want in any direction and make wave riding quicker. They have great upwind capability and depending on size have buoyancy built in. Twin-tips work for beginners, expects, in flat water, and in waves.

  • Mutant is a hybrid between directional and bidirectional boards. This board is very specialized and is great for wave riding and phenomenal upwind performance. Most have 2 footstraps. This type of board favor one direction but can ride nicely in reverse.

  • A Land Board is great for light-wind days. These boards are getting lighter and stronger, with sturdier trucks for landing big airs.

  • Stock Wakeboards are designed to work best in flat water pulled by a boat, which normally have "boot" bindings. The good thing about this type of board is that it can be purchased very cheap.
It is still best if you use a board specifically made for Kite Surfing. More kite surfers nowadays are adding surfboards in their set of Kite Surfing Gear. This is because Surfboards provide great windrange and they are fun to ride in junk conditions. Today, many kiteboard companies already offer surfboards specifically designed for Kite Surfing.

Here is a list of types of boards you can use with a kite:
  • A small directional board
  • Medium Skis for all conditions
  • Short skis for use in pure ice
  • A larger directional board for light wind
  • Snowboard
  • A bidirectional board (a wakeboard)
  • Long racing skis for speed

Kiteboards come in various sizes and shapes to suit the rider’s skill level, riding style, wind and water conditions. Make sure that you are choosing the right board for Kite Surfing. Our Kite Surfing Board Buying Guide section will further help you.
