What is Kite Surfing?

What is Kite Surfing? Kite Surfing, a combination of kite flying and surfing, is also known as Kite Boarding or Fly Surfing. A kite surfer is attached to a board using foot straps or bindings while being connected to a huge kite (usually measures 7-23 meters) using a Kite Harness. Kite surfers are propelled through the water by kites that are controlled by ropes in order to stay on air. Aside from piloting the kite, kite surfers also have to simultaneously maneuver the board on water.

Kite Surfing is relatively new but it is already gaining popularity among extreme and water sport enthusiasts. This year alone, there is an estimated 150,000 to 200,000 kite surfers around the world which is an exponential increase from about 30 kite surfers in 1998.

A variety of Kite Surfing Techniques and tricks can be done while being led by a kite on water. Jumps, spins, grabs, and kite loops are just some of the challenging tricks that make Kite Surfing an enjoyable and exhilarating sport. With winds as low as 5 knots, one can enjoy Kite Surfing using kites that measure over 20 meters. The best condition for Kite Surfing is at 20-25 knot winds using 10-14 meter kites. However, it can be dangerous with winds at over 35 knots.

At present, Kite Surfing is becoming safer because of developments in kite design, instruction, and Safety Release Systems. There have also been improvements in riding styles that cater to kite surfers of all levels and to all types of sea and weather conditions.

Like other outdoor activities, Kite Surfing can be very dangerous if precautionary measures are not observed. In recent years, there have been incidents that have caused serious physical injuries, even fatality. Kite surfers, especially the beginners, should be reminded about the importance of careful preparation and observation of safety guidelines. It should be noted that accidents happen because of equipment failure, erratic weather conditions, and human error. Problematic weather conditions entail high waves and low visibility that would carry the kite surfer away from the shore and make him lose control. Therefore, before every Kite Surfing adventure, all pieces of equipment should be checked or replaced when necessary.

As in every sport, there are always risks that you may encounter. Kite Surfing is no different. For beginners, you need not master all of the aspects right away. Just understand the basic aspects you will learn as you go along our sections and you will do fine.
