Cabarete, 'Ultimate Kiteboarding Destination'
FRIDAY, 23 MARCH 2007
DOMINICAN REPUBLIC, A modish, laid-back beach town located on the north coast of the Dominican Republic (DR), Cabarete has arguably some of the best kiteboarding conditions and instruction in the world. Attracting visitors from around the globe, the town boasts a host of world-class kite schools and kiteboard-themed hotels, embracing those that aspire to learn and practice the sport.
Known as the latest craze in extreme sports, kiteboarding involves a large parachute-like kite that pulls a surfboard across the water. Kite size varies with wind velocity, and when laid flat they can measure 40 to 66 feet in length. Depending on wind speeds, riders can travel up to 35 mph across waves and jump up to 30 feet in the air. Because Cabarete's "Kite Beach" features the perfect combination of wind, water and waves, it attracts avid kiteboarding enthusiasts and has developed into a unique community that encompasses reputable schools, exceptional instructors and passionate students.
"Cabarete's year-round sunshine, steady trade winds and hip environment aren't the only things that make it a fantastic kiteboarding destination," said Laurel Eastman, professional kiteboarder and owner of Laurel Eastman Kiteboarding, a school located on Kite Beach.
"The town has a special vibe as a result of its unpretentious riders who strive to support one another and learn through sharing knowledge of the sport. In my opinion, this combination of elements makes Cabarete one of the top destinations in the world for learning and practicing kiteboarding."
As a result of its ideal kiteboarding conditions, Cabarete draws several highly regarded competitions including the Kiteboarding World Cup and Master of the Ocean. Set to hit the surfer town on June 26, the Kiteboarding World Cup brings together some of the best riders in the world. Cabarete will be the fifth of 11 stops to various countries as part of the Professional Kiteboard Riders Association's (PKRA) World Tour.
Cabarete also hosted the 2007 Master of the Ocean competition in February. An annual event unique to Cabarete, it's a triathlon of kiteboarding, surfing and windsurfing which selects the world's best in each category as well an overall champion.
