Five Best Spots to Fly Your Kite
THURSDAY, 26 JULY 2007

Brace yourselves as we take a tour to Scotland’s best kiting spots:
- Balevullin Bay and Gott Bay
These are just two of the stunning flat beaches on the island where it is easy to send kites soaring. There is always the right directional gust brought about by the on-shore and off-shore winds. Beach-hopping just makes it easier to follow the on-shore winds where one can readily fly his kite.
- St. Andrews
Finding the “kite zone” in Scotland would not be that hard since it is marked out by council kite flags. This is the north end west sands of Saint Andrews known for its large sandy beach and spacious grassy area.
- Stevenson, Ayrshire
The Scottish Power Kite Association (SPKA) holds its racing and freestyle competitions in Stevenson. Here, the beach is quite narrow making the wind direction suitable even when the tide is out. It also has a large park area with hills and paths.
- Bught Park, Inverness
Find yourself flying your kite in gusty winds here at Bught Park. The inland location is great for kiting from Monday to Saturday, however the park is full of footballers on Sundays. Bught Park has decent winds from the south-west which is ideal for kite flying.
- Lunan Bay, Angus
Imagine a broad beach of reddish sand, backed by dunes and framed by low cliffs. It has a fair bit of sand without the flags, and a river at the center that can be jumped or passed with a spot of speed. Lunan Bay is located from its northern end near Boddin Point, about three miles south of Montrose, and stretches over two miles to Ethie Haven.
