Kitesurfers to Conquer Irish Sea in September
TUESDAY, 31 JULY 2007
To raise funds for the RNLI’s Silloth lifeboat and the NSPCC, six men agree to kitesurf 30 miles from the west coast of the county across to the Isle of Man. They plan on using a power kite to propel themselves through the water on a surfboard.
Fraser Dooley, 34, is one of the daring men to do the challenge. Dooley teaches kitesurfing at his Ireby paintballing business Euphoria Extreme for 18 months now.
“I’ve never heard of anyone doing it before – people don’t generally do big water crossings. Ten miles is the most I’ve done in one trip before,” Dooley says as quoted in an article.
The group will begin the voyage in September from either St Bees, Workington or Drigg, and plan to finish the 30-mile crossing in three to four hours depending on the wind and tide. Dooley’s surfing partner Stuart Wood (Low Moresby) gave the idea. Other kitesurfers from Whitehaven, Seaton, Maryport and Silloth are also planning to join.
