Tahunanui Kite Surfers Criticized by Rescuers
TUESDAY, 26 FEBRUARY 2008
After the most recent kite surfing accident at the Tahunanui Beach in New Zealand on February 24, Nelson Surf Lifesaving Club president Marcus Gardner aired his sentiment that kite surfers are risking their lives and costing rescue services thousands of dollars.
He said kite surfers seem to always "ask for trouble" whenever they dare the bad weather without life jackets or flares.
On the contrary, Nelson Surf Lifesaving Club co-owner Sue Anderson said it would be dangerous for kite surfers to carry flares in the water. More so, most surfers already wore "impact vests" which help them float and protect them if they crashed. The kite surfing community, she said, is self-regulating as people look out for the safety of those in the water.
Reports show that there had been at least five other rescues just this summer, while the club had been called to 23 rescues, eight first aid incidents, and 16 searches to date.
